Closing
Libraries
Sadly reports continue of libraries
being closed. We will post on our notice board any references
to information we come across about why libraries are important
and the roles they should play:
Recent references we can recommend
are:
- Boyd, S. A traditional library
goes virtual. Online (USA), March/April 2002, p. 41-45
This is the story of how Bell Canada
library staff changed from a traditional library service to
a virtual library with a different staff mix. Now the library
staff manage the desktop delivery of information for clients who
are using the library for the most difficult reference inquiries.
- Horwitch, M. and Armacost, R.
Helping knowledge management be all it can be. Journal
of Business Strategy(USA) 23 (3) May/June 2002, 26-31
This excellent article by Bain consultants
defines what Knowledge Management is, why it matters, it explains
KM in practice at Bain & Company, and discusses the link between
KM and strategy, the need to drive KM from the top , the need to
have people brokering knowledge and the secondary role of technology.

Smart
searching on the Internet
Anne Mintz is the Knowledge Manager at Forbes magazine
in New York. She was on the Factiva Advisory Board with
Elizabeth Swan and others for 3 years until earlier this year.
Her new book has now been published
WEB OF DECEPTION: MISINFORMATION ON THE INTERNET. Actually
she edits the book which contains chapters by a number of eminent
information professionals in the US including Barbara Quint, Susan
Detwiler, Susan Feldman, Stephen Arnold and several others.
This is a great book for anyone
who wants to use the Internet skilfully for retrieving information.
Horror stories abound on how misleading some corporate information
sites are, charity scams, counterfeit sites, medical misinformation,
email fraud , privacy infringements and much more.
Published by Information Today,
the book will probably be on sale at Information Today's booth
at Information Online in Sydney in January 2003. ISBN
for the information professionals who may not want to wait until
January is 0-0910965-60-9
